Tia Madden is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, and curator. In riddles, her practice ruminates on the porous boundary between drawing and writing, the poetics of illegibility, and the potential for abstract marks to behave communicatively when framed or misread as language.
By combining traditions of abstraction with the materials, rules, and aesthetics of writing systems, Madden unsettles assumptions around how meaning is constructed, interpreted, and culturally authorised. What emerges, unmoored, are ancient, arcane, and speculative sign-systems: human-made markings whose meanings exceed the frameworks imposed on them by colonial power, scientific interpretation, or occult and mystical belief.
